Winter Croquet
The One Ball Tournament is the traditional way in which Cheltenham Croquet Club marks the start of the New Year. The Old Bath Road lawns had experienced a covering of early morning frost but this had not penetrated the ground sufficiently to make the lawns unplayable, although there were some slightly eccentric bumps and bobbles at times.
Manager David Magee organised the competition on winners playing winners in subsequent rounds and, by the lunch break, it was becoming clear that the women members were holding sway with Penny Crowe and Liz Potter vying for the lead. Each player was in winning form but Potter managed to overcome Crowe in their match to take first place. Sheila Chaplin was also in good form gaining a twelve point win over her opponent.
This was a particularly notable win for Liz Potter who travels a considerable distance each season to compete with some success. This however was her first ever tournament win at Cheltenham.
