May Open Day

Croquet Report – 16th May 2010

Cheltenham Croquet Club held its first Members Day Tournament of the season at the Old Bath Road club. Overcast conditions greeted the players but the lawns were playing fast and true. For the first time in the club’s history the Association Croquet and Golf Croquet sections shared the lawns and produced a good mixture of competitive play and interaction between the two disciplines.

Manager Neil Kellett is fast building a reputation for introducing new twists on Association competitions and this Tournament was no exception. Once the new format had settled in the players minds they coped well with the new challenges presented and produced some good play.

Penny Crowe played well all day and this, combined with good partnership pairings, saw her win the low handicap section with 52 points. Rita Burns started the day in good form and her confidence was rewarded with a 51 point win in the high handicap section of the event.

Russell Barter ensured a smooth running of the Golf Croquet section and the format produced a very close result. Nick Cram was a clear winner in the morning but the afternoon play resulted in a three way tie between Cram, Karen Wilson and David Holmes.

The next tournament at Cheltenham is the Advanced Weekend Tournament on the 22nd and 23rd May.
